Settlement update – Equifax security breach in September 2017

The Federal Trade Commission recently announced there has been a settlement reached for those affected by the Equifax security breach in September 2017.  The breach, one of the largest in US history, affected 147-150 million people.  The FTC has set up a website for those who have been affected and would like to file a claim.  Filing a claim gives you the opportunity to receive up to ten years of free identity theft protection and reimbursement for various expenses incurred as a result of the breach.  Those who do not wish to file a claim can still receive free identity restoration help for up to seven years, and, beginning in 2020, up to six credit reports per year from Equifax.  You can file a claim at https://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/cases-proceedings/refunds/equifax-data-breach-settlement.

Those who are not sure if they were impacted may check at https://eligibility.equifaxbreachsettlement.com/en/eligibility.  Consumers have until January 22, 2020 to file a claim.
