National Ag Week in Nebraska & Wyoming

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Nebraska’s got a lot to be proud of and when it comes to agriculture, we’re second to none!

National Ag Week is here and it’s the perfect time to celebrate the industry that fuels our economy, fills our plates, and keeps our rural communities strong.

From world-class beef to top-tier crops, Nebraska agriculture is leading the way. Last year, the state’s beef and veal exports topped $2 billion, making the state number one in the nation. And it’s not just beef—Nebraska ranks high in pork production and is a powerhouse in crops like corn, soybeans, and sorghum.

And let’s talk biofuels—Nebraska is home to 24 ethanol plants, producing more than 2.3 billion gallons a year, making the Cornhusker state the second-largest ethanol producer in the U.S. That’s big business with a big impact on energy independence and sustainability.

Nebraska’s farmers and ranchers are more than just hard workers—they’re innovators, using precision ag, genetic advancements, and cutting-edge technology to do more with less. Their work shapes not just our state, but the world.

Wyoming’s National Ag Week is celebrated with various events that

highlight the importance of agriculture in the state.

Here are some of the notable events:

National Ag Day: Celebrated on March 18th, this day is dedicated to

recognizing and celebrating the contributions of agriculture. It is a day

for education, awareness, and appreciation of the agricultural industry.

Ag Day: This event is hosted by the Agriculture Council of America and  aims to educate the public about the role of agriculture in everyday life.

It encourages people to understand how food and fiber products are

produced and the essential role agriculture plays in maintaining a strong economy.

Together we grow. We grow food. We grow economies. We grow leaders. We grow communities. Agriculture: Together We Grow.

It takes all kinds of farmers and ranchers to grow the different commodities needed to keep our nation fed and secure. In Wyoming, a state where there are more cattle than people, cattle and calves are ranked as the largest livestock commodity raised. Wyoming is the number one state in the nation for wool production and number four in the nation for sheep and lambs. Hay is the leading crop raised in Wyoming. Our farmers also grow corn, sugarbeets, wheat, barley and dry edible beans. In fact, Wyoming is ranked fifth in the nation for barley production and seventh in the nation for pinto beans.

In agriculture, we have the grand responsibility of not only making it work while we are here on earth, but making it work for future generations. To be a good steward means implementing the kind of management that works. Making careful and responsible choices for the land that we have been entrusted to care for is important and necessary.

We want to empower your protection. Here are some reminders:

There are several steps you can take to protect yourself and others from fraud and scams. Criminals and con artists use many scams to target unsuspecting people who

have access to money. Consumer scams happen on the phone, through the mail, e-mail, or over the internet. They can occur in person, at home, or at a business. Please keep these tips in mind:

Don’t share numbers or passwords for accounts, credit cards, or Social Security.

Never pay up front for a promised prize. It’s a scam if someone is told that they must pay fees or taxes to receive a prize or other financial windfall.

After hearing a sales pitch, take time to compare prices. Ask for information in writing and read it carefully.

Too good to be true? Ask why someone is trying so hard to give a “great deal.” If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Watch out for deals that are only “good today” and that pressure you to act quickly. Walk away from high-pressure sales tactics that don’t allow time to read a contract or get legal advice before signing. Also, don’t fall for the sales pitch to pay immediately, for example by wiring the money or sending it by courier.

Recipe of the Month

Southwest Beef Wraps

Ingredients:

1 beef Shoulder Roast Boneless or Bottom Round Rump Roast (2-1/2 to 3 pounds)

1 medium onion, quartered

3 teaspoons minced garlic

3/4 cup water

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

2 jars (16 ounces) chunky salsa, divided

8 flour tortillas (10-inch diameter), warmed

Fresh cilantro (optional)

Tomato-Corn Relish:

1 cup fresh or frozen corn – defrosted

1 cup chopped fresh tomato

2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

Cooking:

Cut beef Shoulder Roast into 4 even pieces. Place onion and garlic in 4-1/2 to 5-1/2-quart slow cooker; top with beef. Add water, salt and pepper. Cover and cook on HIGH 5 to 5-1/2 hours or on LOW 9 to 9-1/2 hours or until beef is fork-tender. (No stirring is necessary during cooking.)

Remove beef; cool slightly. Strain cooking liquid; skim fat. Shred beef with 2 forks. Place beef in 2-quart microwave-safe dish; add 1/2 cup cooking liquid.

Combine Tomato-Corn Relish ingredients in medium bowl; stir in 1/4 cup salsa.

Add remaining salsa to beef; mix well. Cover and microwave on HIGH 8 to 10 minutes or until heated through, stirring once.

Top each tortilla with 3/4 cup beef mixture, leaving 1-1/2-inch border around edge. Top beef with about 1/4 cup relish. Fold right and left sides of tortillas over filling; fold bottom edge over and roll up. Garnish with cilantro, if desired.

Alternate Cooking Method:

This recipe can be made in a 6-quart electric pressure cooker. Cut beef Shoulder Roast into 4 even pieces. Place beef in pressure cooker; add onion, garlic, 1/2 cup water, salt and pepper. Close and lock pressure cooker lid. Use meat, stew or high-pressure setting on pressure cooker; program 90 minutes on pressure cooker timer. Use quick-release feature to release pressure; carefully remove lid. Continue as directed in step 2. (This recipe variation was tested in an electric pressure cooker at high altitude. Cooking at an altitude of less than 3000 feet may require slightly less cooking time. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.
